      ----

Late Friday afternoon SIS received a phone call from Vice Principal Kathleen
Hamberick (Pacific alum) of Lodi Unified School District. She has a 14 year
old male student who is now in the U.S. living with his mother who has been
here for a long time. The young man was left with a family in a very small
village in Guatemala and can only speak a Mayan dialect that no one not even
his mother can understand. I believe she said this is the village he lived
in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. Kathleen Hamberick is trying to assist this
student with communication and was hoping that one of our faculty members
could assist or direct her to someone who could. I guess the poor kid is
having a real hard time not only with school but just trying to understand
what is going on. She asked if someone could please contact her. I don't
know just what to say to her or in what direction to tell her to go. If
either one of you have some time to contact her and maybe extract more
information or get her to someone who can assist I know she would be most
      grateful.

Her contact information is (209) 331-8332 or her cell (209) 481-9921.

      Thank you
      Kitty

Tulane and UT-Austin sponsor an intensive summer course for learning Kaqchikel in Guatemala. Maybe those departments would know of someone in your area.

This may be far-fetched, but can this boy write in his own language? Maybe he can correspond with someone in Guatemala who can help him with English.
