Subject: New research skills standards for anthropology

TO: Norma Gonzales, Council on Anthropology and Education and Ann Kaupp,
Society for Anthropoogy in Community Colleges

I am a librarian who attended the AAA annual meeting in San Jose in 2006
to introduce to CAE and SACC a document on research skills and
competencies for anthropology students that two colleagues and I were
working on at the time, and to gather input on the draft from members.
(I've cc'd Perry Gilmore and Rebecca Stein because they were my contacts
who graciously allowed me time at their respective business meetings.)

I'm writing now to announce that the Information Literacy Standards for
Anthropology and Sociology Students received final approval from the
Association of College and Research Libraries and are now available
      online at
      http://www.ala.org/ala/acrl/acrlstandards/anthro_soc_standards.cfm
      <http://www.ala.org/ala/acrl/acrlstandards/anthro_soc_standards.cfm> .
Members of your groups might be interested to read them, to respond to
them, to use them and/or to discuss with librarians on their campuses
      how to use them.

The standards document will also be published in the June 2008 issue of
College & Research Libraries News, a publication that many academic
librarians receive but I would venture few if any anthropologists. We
hope to work with AAA to publicize and help implement the standards in
classrooms and anthro departments, so an announcement would be a great
      first step.

Do you have a way to announce the new Standards to your members, perhaps
via a listserv? Would you want to do this? Please let us know. Thank
      you!

      Patti
