      Hi Gang!

I'm enjoying the discussion of the mission statement. My career is littered with mission statements, goals, objectives, outcomes, etc. One thing I have learned is that you must balance idealism with pragmatism. Sometimes its a good exercise to begin at the end and ask: What activities do you see SACC engaged in? Then follow this with: How do we write our mission statement so as to support what we want to do and how we want to do it?

Externally, SACC represents the concerns of the community colleges to the larger anthropological community as represented by the AAA. As much as this relationship brings us grief, it is very important, which is why I feel that it is essential that we maintain our formal relationship with AAA and try to find a to coexist with their often #@$!!! regulations. We accomplish this by such activities as our column in Anthropology News, sponsoring sessions at the annual meeting, participating on AAA committees, educating AAA officers by inviting them to meetings, and so forth. We must also continue to develop collaborations with K-12 and universities.

Our internal functions include organizing a community of cc anthropologists to provide for effective communication, provide activities to improve our knowledge and skills, participate in terrific annual meetings, etc.

This type of discussion is essential as we ponder our participation in AnthroSource. Is SACC Notes an internal document by which we share our own thoughts and experiences through non-refereed articles? My Flores Island paper is certainly of this type. Or do we provide opportunities for our members to publish research and editorial articles for the larger anthropological community? The answer to our participation in AnthroSource lies in our mission statement.

Im looking forward to good discussion in Savannah! Im arriving Tuesday evening and plan to spend Wednesday walking the streets, if anyone cares to join me.

      Role of SACC Notes

and it seems a great mission description.

Personally, I'd like to see the SACC mission statement be a little more
assertive about the importance of effective teaching to the discipline, and
to locate SACC at the center of that effort. Something along the lines of,
"To provide a setting to encourage dialogue among teachers of anthropology
across sub-disciplines and institutional settings; and to promote excellence
      in the teaching of anthropology."

      Thanks Rebecca,
This can be are starting place. The first thing that strikes
me is that this mission statement has a very broad scope in terms of the
different levels of teachers it addresses as well as the activities that are
included. Do we want to leave our mission statement broad or do we want to
      narrow the focus?

The AnthroSource contract requires that we have a mission statement and
publish it on page 2 of SACC Notes, so I made a draft of a simple and
very brief one along the lines of AAA's statement in the AN newsletter.
I'll throw it into the hopper:

Teaching Anthropology: SACC Notes (TASN) is published semi-annuallyin
March and Octoberby the Society for Anthropology in Community Colleges.

SACC's mission is to support and foster the teaching of introductory
and undergraduate-level anthropology and the dissemination of
anthropological knowledge at community colleges and other educational
        institutions.

TASN advances this mission by providing members with information on
teaching anthropology, current disciplinary trends and issues and
general news of importance or interest to SACC.
