      Below please find the listings for three new job openings in
      environmental anthropology and sociology, and social demography at
      Florida International University in Miami, Florida (a member of
      Florida's State University System).

      The Department of Sociology & Anthropology at Florida International
      University has been authorized to conduct three searches for scholars
      engaged in environmental social science research, including an
      environmental anthropologist. Below find descriptions of all three
      positions.

      1. Environmental Anthropologist. The Department of Sociology &
      Anthropology invites applicants for a tenure-track position as Assistant
      Professor, to start in Fall 2004. Other ranks will be considered. The
      Department seeks applicants with specializations in environmental
      anthropology and Latin America. Preference will be given to candidates
      with an active research agenda and potential for external research
      funding. Applicants must submit a letter describing research and
      teaching interests, a curriculum vitae, and the names of three
      references by December 1 to: Chair, Environmental Anthropology Search
      Committee, Department of Sociology & Anthropology, DM 334, Florida
      International University, University Park Campus, Miami, FL 33199. We
      will be interviewing candidates at the AAA. FIU is an Equal

      2. Social Demographer. The Department of Sociology & Anthropology
      invites applicants for a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor to

      seeks a social demographer with specializations in immigration and
      comparative/global studies, who will also teach undergraduate and
      graduate research methods/statistics. Preference will be given to
      candidates with an active research agenda and potential for external

      and teaching interests, a curriculum vitae, and the names of three

      About the Department: Florida International University's Department of
      Sociology and Anthropology offers a specialization in "Environment and
      Sustainability." The faculty conduct research in South Florida, the
      Caribbean and Latin America. Research and course topics include
      environmental change and subsistence practices, political ecology,
      landscape ethnography, environmental justice and advocacy, conservation
      and sustainable development, as well as research into local
      environmental knowledge and its many applications.


      Department faculty and students participate in several interdisciplinary
      centers, departments, and institutes at Florida International
      University. These include the Environmental Studies Department, the
      Latin American and Caribbean Center, the African New World Studies
      Program, the International Hurricane Center, the Institute for Public
      Opinion Research, the Institute for Immigration and Ethnicity, and the
      Southeast Environmental Research Center. The ongoing $8.9 billion South
      Florida Everglades Restoration initiative provides unique research
      opportunities for graduate students and faculty, with several faculty
      members participating in the interdisciplinary Human Dimensions of the
      Everglades research consortium.
