      MAGAZINES & JOURNALS

A glance at the April/May issue of "Community College Journal": The
      community-college population is younger now

The average age of community-college students is lower than we
think, says Clifford Adelman, a senior research analyst with the
Institution of Education Sciences of the U.S. Department of
Education, and that realization should affect colleges' plans
      for the future.

Community colleges had been acting under the assumption that the
average age of their students was 29, Mr. Adelman says. However,
as the children of the baby-boom generation have swelled the
ranks of colleges, a higher percentage of community college
students are enrolling right after high school.

Community colleges would do well to examine the needs of this
younger population, Mr. Adelman says, and to find ways to
increase their program-completion rates. "Traditional age
students have time later on in their labor market life to seek
training in more specialized niches," he writes: "Get the
students ... to a certificate or degree now, and community
      colleges will see them again."

The article, titled "A Growing Plurality," is available online.
