      Position:                 Assistant Professor, Tenure Track

       STARTING DATE:    August 2003


      QUALIFICATIONS:   Ph.D. in anthropology with specialization in cultural anthropology is required. Primary emphasis in medical and/or psychological anthropology. The successful candidate must demonstrate a record of successful scholarly and/or creative activity and demonstrated potential for effective teaching using a variety of methodologies including active, experiential learning. Demonstrated ability and/or interest in working in a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural environment.



      QUALIFICATIONS:   The successful candidate will be broadly trained in the four field approach in anthropology and have a commitment to teaching anthropology as an important facet of a well-rounded education. Candidates should demonstrate potential for successful competition for grants and contracts leading in support of scholarly and/or applied research involving advanced undergraduates and graduate students.  In addition to expertise in medical and/or psychological anthropology, we seek an individual with expertise in ethnographic research methods, applied anthropology and issues of gender, ethnicity and class in experiencing health and disease. Regional area of interest open, but should complement that of existing faculty.


      responsibilities: Successful candidate is expected to teach courses in medical and psychological anthropology, other courses in the candidate’s area of expertise as well as general education courses in anthropology at the undergraduate level. Teaching assignments are dependent upon the background of the individual and the needs of the department. The individual will also engage in scholarly and creative activity as part of expected duties for retention, tenure and promotion. Candidates should be knowledgeable about and interested in working with California’s diverse population.


      SALARY RANGE:     Assistant Professor.  Salary range is $40,488-46,488 depending on qualifications and experience. 


      THE DEPARTMENT: The Department of Anthropology enrolls approximately 100 majors.  The Department is committed to the four-field approach, and offers certificate programs in Cultural Anthropology, Cultural Resources Management, Forensic Anthropology and Museum Studies. The Department offers a B.A. major, and supports a well-respected M.A. program that has produced graduates who have gone on to distinguished doctoral programs or obtained relevant employment in the workforce. The Department is known on campus for excellence in teaching, with two Master Teachers currently on the faculty.
