Subject: [ANTHRO-L] Vigils across Europe for the Bushmen's last stand

      4 February 2002

On Wednesday 13 February 2002 from noon - 2pm, Survival
International, the worldwide organisation supporting tribal peoples,
will launch a weekly vigil outside the Botswana High Commission in
London. Simultaneous vigils will be held in Paris, Madrid and  Milan.
Others will follow around the world.

The vigil is in protest at the government's decision to cut off water
supplies today to the Gana and Gwi Bushmen tribes in the Central
Kalahari Game Reserve, in a final effort to force them into exile. A
Bushman spokesperson said, 'Why do the government make our people
suffer?  The lives of our people are not free... In the rest of
Botswana people live in peace and harmony but not in this corner, the
      Central Kalahari Game Reserve...."

      When: Wednesday 13th February 2002 noon - 2pm
Where: Opposite the Botswana High Commission, 6 Stratford Place,
London W1 (nearest tube is Bond Street)

The Gana and Gwi have lived on their ancestral lands, which lie
inside the reserve, for thousands of years, but the Botswana
government has waged a 16-year campaign to force them off their
ancestral lands and relocate them to bleak 'resettlement' camps where
they can only live on government handouts and where they are reduced
to boredom, alcoholism and despair. Now, the authorities have
announced that water supplies to the last Bushmen in the Reserve will
be cut off. The government claims it cannot afford the service: the
EU's offer to fund it has gone unanswered. Besides, Botswana is a
rich country which is now the world's biggest diamond producer.

Many believe the Reserve's rich diamond deposits are the real reason
for the government's action. It also wants to open the Reserve to
tourism, and has a deeply racist view of the Bushmen as 'primitive'
for living by hunting, rather than herding cattle, which is seen as
      more 'civilised'.

NB The names Gana and Gwi contain sounds not conveyed by this spelling, and can
be written as G//ana and G/wi. Survival omits the symbols '//' and '/' as they
are not understood by most people internationally.

peoples. It stands for their right to decide their own future and
helps them protect their lives, lands and human rights.
