      Good day!

Here are news bulletins from The Chronicle of Higher Education
      for Monday, July 23.

      *  STUDENTS AT MORE THAN 100 COMMUNITY COLLEGES will be
questioned next spring as part of an effort to measure
institutional quality. The project mirrors a survey on
student engagement that was conducted last year among 63,000
students at four-year institutions as a potential alternative
         to college rankings.

      HIGHLIGHTS FROM THIS WEEK'S CHRONICLE

LOST HORIZON: Shawn Wight, an Ohio State graduate student,
contracted a fatal illness while on a research expedition in the
Himalayas. Did he have to die?

THEORY INTO PRACTICE: Full-time faculty members should run the
show. But adjuncts who teach as a sideline are more convincing
in demonstrating the real value of education, writes Bruce E.R.
Thompson, a librarian at California State University at San
Marcos and an adjunct professor of philosophy at Cuyamaca
      College.
