Subject: Request for panel papers on tourism at next AAA

      Colleagues:
I am interested in organizing a session for the 2001 AAA meetings next year
in Washington, DC, next November 28-Dec.2.  The general topic is:
Contributions of Anthropology to the Tourism Industry.  I am interested in
papers that will discuss specific ways in which anthropologists have worked
together in or with the travel industry in some way or have provided
assistance and/or consultation to people and organizations working in the
tourism industry. I am trying to find papers that are examples of putting
anthropological practice into the tourism industry settings, rather than
critiques of tourism impacts of or the tourist gaze.
The papers could deal with such things as collaborative efforts between
local governments and anthropologists in evaluating or developing tourist
attractions, programs or policies, educational efforts for local, regional
or national governments, helpful efforts of anthropologists working within
the travel industry to bring cross-cultural or environmental sensitivities
to the forefront in planning or improving or adapting attractions,
lodgings, food, souvenir sales, transportation, etc.  Papers may also deal
with policy, ethical, or data gathering issues.  It is possible that some
of the papers may be published.  For further information or suggestions for
contributions, please contact me as soon as possible at the address
      below.  Thank you.
      Please excuse cross-postings.
