Most Romans spoke LATIN, but the upper classes would read and be able to
speak Greek, like well educated people in Europe speak a second or third
language. Cicero, Pliny, Ovid, all write in what language?
Don't let the non-scholars and the religious leaders who are against this
for whatever reason confuse you, please. The Palestinian peoples who were
well educated spoke some Greek, The language of upper class Egypt was
Greek, but the latin Roman soldiers spoke Latin, and the auxiliaries spoke
their own languages, plus some latin. Their commanders and Pilate
conversed in Latin among themselves, and used Greek or Aramaic or whatever
laguages they knew when conversing with the barbarians, especially the
xenophobic jews. Like today, the jews of Jesus' time regarded anyone not
of their religion as less than human (the gentiles they wouldn't eat with)
and anyone not of their sect (many divisions in the jewish religion) as a
traitor to the truth. The jewish leadership as a whole hated the message
and idea of Jesus as a gentle messiah. This was a horrible concept,
because it didn't immediately free the jews from the hated gentile rulers
and occupation. Now some Cathjolic leaders and jewish leaders say this film
is awful because it shows that the jewish religious leaders plotted the
death of Jesus and that the Romans really didn't care and are only the
tools of the jewish religious leaders. Sorry, but that is historical fact,
and Mel Gibson is trying to do an accurate movie, not a politically
correct, feel good film that makes everybody happy.
