      SHROUD RESEARCHER PROVES IT AUTHENTIC

BEACHWOOD, NJ, JUL 1, 2005 (RCN) - The American Shroud of Turin Association for Research and the Holy Shroud Guild, in cooperation and association with the International Center of Sindonology of Turin, Italy, are sponsoring the Third International Dallas Scientific Conference on the Shroud of Turin, September 8 - 11, 2005. The three day conference will be held at The Adolphus Hotel in Dallas, Texas.

John N. Lupia, a presenter will read his paper: "The Shroud: The Seamless Garment of Christ and the C-14 Dating in 1988." His research demonstrates that the Shroud of Turin is an ancient Jewish tallit manufactured in the first century AD. It belonged to Jesus Christ and is identified as the seamless garment confiscated in a dice game during the crucifixion. The disciples purchased it back from the Roman soldier so that Jesus would be buried in it according to Jewish custom. By that custom the four corners containing tassels called tzitzith were cut off during burial.

During the medieval period the four corners were nearly completely restored when the restoration came to an unexpected halt for unexplained reasons.

It was from the restored corners that the scientists in 1988 cut the sample to date the Shroud, but mistakenly dated the restoration instead. The C-14 dating only tells us the date of the restoration, not the main textile of the Shroud.

Since 1988 critics have erroneously pointed to the medieval date as evidence the Shroud is a hoax or fraud.

Having collaborated with Raymond N. Rogers for several months prior to his death this past March 5th, Lupia was able to confirm from a scientists working directly with linen fibers taken from the Shroud of Turin that the samples taken from the corner did not match the main textile of the Shroud and that evidence of the four corners being restored was found in photographs taken by the STURP team.

Lupia has shared his research paper with Dorothy Crispino, Chair, the International Committee for the Dallas Conference, as well as committee members whose identities have not yet been disclosed.

A copy of his paper was also sent to Sue Benford and Joseph Marino, two Shroud researchers working as a team this June 14th. Benford and Marino earlier proposed the C-14 sample was taken from a repaired corner, not knowing the Shroud was a tallit and that all four corners are restored.
