      LEGO Mindstorms NXT Level 2
      Saturday, March 20, 2010

This class introduces intermediate level topics in building and programming robots using the LEGO Mindstorms NXT Robotics System. Students with previous LEGO Mindstorms experience practice mechanical design, construction, programming and teamwork skills. In pairs, using LEGO parts, motors and sensors, students build one or two different robot models and use a computer to program their robots to move, react, and make sounds in order to solve challenges. This class is good preparation for kids or mentors interested in robotics competitions such as FIRST LEGO League. Students should be 9 years old and over. Previous LEGO Mindstorms experience or instructor approval is recommended for this workshop. Bring a sack lunch for 45-minute lunch break.

      LEGO Animation Studio
      Saturday, April 17, 2010

In one day, build your own mini movie set and create your own animated movie using provided LEGO® mini figures or other objects you bring or make! Using LEGO® Cam and LEGO® Studios software, you use a computer and video camera to make your animated movie using stop-motion and live video techniques. You then edit your movie and add exciting sound effects, music, narration and titles with the LEGO Studios software. Your finished movie will be mailed to you on a DVD. Adults are welcome to register. Bring a sack lunch for 45-minute lunch break.

      Java Greenfoot Games & Simulations
      Wednesday Evenings, April 21 - June 9, 2010

This class is an introduction to programming games and simulations using the Greenfoot Java programming framework for kids in grades 8 through 10. Older students and adults are also welcome to register. Some prior programming experience is recommended. Greenfoot provides a framework for easily programming interactive 2-D simulations and games based on a World and Actor model. Programming concepts and techniques are introduced and practiced through a series of fun programming examples such as creating animal and physics simulations and simple interactive games. Students will use Java programming language to define objects, variables and methods for implementing their simulations and games. 90-minute class sessions include time to work on the programs with help from the instructor. Some homework time is required to complete the lessons. Students should bring their own laptop computer (PC or Mac), or arrange with the instructor for use of a computer (for an extra fee). Software is provided at the first class.
