      To get just a bit out of our period there's a great scene in the old movie "Those Magnificent Men and Their Flying Machines" that involves a duel between a Frenchman and a German with blunderbusses in balloons over an open cesspool!

      Jay Callaham mentioned an incident involving Frenchmen dueling in mid-air,
      assisted by balloons. That incident, and many more, are written about in an
      article contained in the March 2004 issue of Smithsonian magazine. It is
      available online at:

      Alas, it focuses on the 19th Century, but it is interesting reading
      nonetheless. My personal favorite are the duelists who defended their honor
      with billiard balls. (ouch!)
