List - as many of us occasionally have to post sentries (e.g. Under the Redcoat) I thought a recent order from Lord Cornwallis issued in 1777 may be of interest on how to interpret this function.

Never to Pay the Compliment of Rested Armes [sic] but On the Approach of an
Officer are to face Outward & Stand Shoulder’d -
No Guards Are to Turn out to Lord Cornwallis
