A hopeful request for obscure bit of history
- In my effort to inject as much reality in my novel, I was wondering when the streets of Washington, particularly Pennsylvania Avenue was paved. I know Georgetown had cobbled streets, but I don't know since when. I read how bad Washington streets were in 1801, but they had a mayor in 1802 or 03 who had responsibility for streets, etc. But I have nothing when the streets were paved except they were finally paved with Belgium block granite pavers late in the 1830s. Macadamized roads didn't occur in the US until the 1820s
Any help is appreciated as always.
