On behalf of Svend Robinson, Senior Advisor, Resource Mobilization Unit I am forwarding attached the final copies of the Sao Paulo Declaration, in four languages and a list of those Parliamentarians who participated in the workshop and joined in the consensus on the Declaration. A number of civil society activists were present at the workshop, from Brazil, Manoj Pardeshi from ITPC India, and other countries. We also had a powerful intervention from Brazilian MP Paulo Teixeira, who has been one of the leaders in that country in fighting for access to affordable medicines. David Martin MEP, and Chair of the WG on Access to Medicines in the European Parliament, spoke eloquently of the need to fight TRIPS+ provisions in trade deals such as the EU-India FTA. Paul Dewar from Canada and Richard Elliott both spoke of the efforts in that country to facilitate access to affordable generic medicines for Africa. Parliamentarians also heard from the head of UNITAID, Jorge Bermudez, and Salvador Yameogo, MP from Burkina Faso. Finally, Dr. Olusoji Adeyi from the Global Fund spoke about efforts by the Fund to work with partners and lower the price of medicines and other pharmaceutical products. This declaration is also a success thanks to the support of Asia Russel, Alexandra Heumber, Richard Elliott, Mohga Kamal-Yanni and others.
The Declaration was subsequently presented to the plenary session of the Partnership Forum, to strong applause, and the Parliamentarians committed to actively work to support the Declaration in their home countries and networks.
We hope that you will distribute the Declaration widely and encourage your partners globally to do the same, and encourage other elected officials to support and promote the Declaration. It is now posted on the Global Fund website as well, at http://www.theglobalfund.org/en/partnershipforum/2011/speeches/
