Apparantly Edwards replaced early 1926 by Mack Shaw who was with band till
Braud. An Ellington specialist would know current state of play.

Toby Hardwick reported that a straight tuba was used at the Kentucky Club
only because the bandstand was too small for any other bass instrument to
      fit.

At least one photo showing Braud with sousaphone although nowhere on record
      I think.

Agree brass apt for late 'classic'/proto swing era but somehow cannot hear
it functioning in lighter swing environment of mid/late swing era.

Good point about the tuba adding extra voice for good arranger. It lived
again, briefly, at the hands of Gil Evans and few others at the 'Birth Of
      The Cool'.

Is there any difference in sound or anything except form between tuba and
      sousaphone. Anybody ?

      Dave

Be sure to check the Brass Band History page on that site - lots of research here!
