      The utility and value of Gap-filling selections is of course a question of where the gaps are, and plainly FROG have a good idea of relation between patterns of past purchases and the patterns of gaps which have resulted.

      Mention of Historical Records (which Pete Russell did on occasion call Hysterical) reminds me of the time when having heard of STORYVILLE magazine the proprietors sent a couple of review copies, and followed up the reviews of these LPs with shrieks of protest. There had been no complaints in North America, they exclaimed, not taking the point that European reissues paid attention to rather more than the fact that this or that item had been recorded before 1930.

      But who else would have issued the two-sided duet between Oliver Cobb on cornet and Eddie Johnson, or whichever pianist it was who sounded as if like Johnson he had been born even earlier than Eubie Blake after 1946 claimed to be, and seemed to think that on "Weather Bird" Earl Hines had been doing avant-garde things some people much later came to associate with Paul Bley. I really must unearth my LP with that ripe piece of awfulness on it. It cost me less than a quid, on a trip round the then specialist shops, one of which had dumped it among the almost unsellables with in one corner a lump comprised of strata of price-tags recording successive reductions.
