Re: Ladnier in Barcelona (was: too long to copy)
- Dear Howard
I have been doing some research on Sam Wooding's stays in Barcelona in 1926 and 1929, and just found your message from three years ago.
I'd just like to point out that Sam Wooding was playing in Barcelona from (at least) June 1 to July 15. I have "farewell concert" ads for July 15 and a concert ad from May 31 stating that Sam Wooding and his Chocolate Kiddies would play the next day at the Casino San Sebastián in Barcelona's beach.
If needed, I would gladly provide scans of those advertisements (I have about 30 from his 1929 stay).

I recall reading that he is being seriously reconsidered for the Barcelona session after having been dropped for a few years. This was due to his identification by one of the other musicians (possibly Doc Cheatham - my memory isn't what it used to be).
Yes, Doc is behind this reversion.
I did the discography for his autobiography, with his co-operation and input, and he named Ladnier for the Barcelona dates. I therefore retained him. While we're here it has been repeatedly asserted in recent years on the basis of adjacent matrices that these sessions took place on 9/10 April 1929. They didn't. There is incontrovertible contemporary evidence that they took place in early July - incontrovertible because the band's appearance in Barcelona was from 6-30 June. If the matrix evidence is correctly reported the masters must have been assigned in advance (but my guess would be that we would be looking at Madrid and Barcelona matrix blocks assigned
