Another good JSP issue is the Breaking Out of New Orleans, 1922 –
1929, boxed set. Four CDs covering the Celestin's Original Tuxedo
Orchestra tracks made for Columbia, the utterly sublime Sam Morgan's
Jazz Band tracks also made for Columbia, the Jones-Collins Astoria
Hot 8s (although without the alternative takes), the Louis Dumaine
Jazzola 8s (recorded, like the Jones-Collins sides, for Victor),
Armand Piron's New Orleans Orchestra (not complete, though), Fate
Marable, Freddie Keppard, and the New Orleans Bootblacks and
Wanderers. Oh, and the Kid Ory's Sunshine Orchestra (or Spike's Seven
Pods of Pepper) tracks from 1922. Recommended.
      Robert Greenwood.
