8504RE: [RedHotJazz] Instrumentation similar to the KOCJB
- Feb 28, 2011Many thanks Peter
Right, I was specifically considering dance bands.
The Robichaux has two violins and, interestingly, a slide trombone as early
as 1896. Robichaux's was certainly a reading band and their music would have
been very different from that of the CJB.
Also found photo Fate Marable band from supposed 1918/1919 with also
supposed Louis together with Joe Howard on cornets. This would prove that
Louis was already familiar with a two cornet band although Marable's was
also strictly reading.
Max Harrison, in a review in 'Essential Jazz Records' of the Celestin sides
previously mentioned, observes the similarity between these and the CJB. He
questions whether this is imitation or common source. That is the question.
