Group Description

This group is one of the hubs of the Stop Real ID Now! grassroots activism campaign. Our goal is to get over 100,000 comments submitted on the draft implementation regulations by the May 8 deadline.

The Real ID Act of 2005 would turn our state driver’s licenses into a national identity card at a cost of over $20 billion dollars, infringe privacy, and impose major burdens on taxpayers, citizens, immigrants, and state governments – while doing nothing to protect against terrorism. See PrivacyActivism's short analysis of the recently published draft implementation regulations for a quick summary of some of the issues, and the ACLU's Real Nightmare page for much more information.

The 60-day commenting period on these draft regulations (ending April 30) offers a great opportunity to stop the Real ID Act in its tracks, by combining a national campaign to solicit comment with state-by-state battles -- Maine and Idaho have already decided not to participate, and Arizona, Missouri, South Carolina, California and others are all heading in that direction.

If you'd like to get email notifications, please join the Stop Real ID Now mailing list; and if you'd like to sign up to help, please join the volunteers mailing list.
