      this has worked for me.

        With Ubuntu could go later edition,however
      finding video drivers is tough.  I use low profile,low power machine
      that runs continuously.  Would have to add video card to match drivers in latest Ubuntu.

       With correct driver we could have video
      acceleration in the Pi,to assist the struggling SOC.  
      With our text based Amateur programs this is not as necessary/needed.

      In the Pi,some programs available may not function well. They may not
      be compiled for arm,or even arm v6.  With the latest updates(Wheezy) it appears that "Putty" may be working ok now. Of course "Minicom" is stable. Setting Fonts & terminal window size is tricky. Some times
      it's done in the terminal settings of Wheezy. Other times with the actual program..

      It sounds like its worth a shot! 
      I'm glad to hear that Ubuntu supports arm 8, I have one machine running Ubuntu 11.04 and was planning on a transfer of my EchoIRLP node over to it but with the developments with the RPi I will most likely move it to the Pi.

      It's been running on Fedora 3 v 5 for 13 years on an old i386 machine 24/7 and I feel it's long overdue for an upgrade. Eventhough it's been flawless in its performance.

      Good luck with the Pi bake off, keep me posted on the results.

       When some of these other variations are actually available will try them.   IE: cubieboard,hackberry & others.  BTW they are running arm 8 architecture,Ubuntu is supporting that version.

      Use Ubuntu 11.04 here on main machine,an AMD E350 APU. (low power)
      Main meaning the one I use most,have an Athlon FX & Intel I5 also.
      Keep some winders machines around for when repairing other peoples machines.

      I had one Pi with the same problem and yes it was bad solder connections!
      My solution: pre heat your oven to 425 degrees f and place it on the center rack of the oven on a non combustible platform, I used a metal coat hanger and bent it into a stand that allowed the pi to rest on the edges.
      Bake for 9 minutes and the pi is done....serve with ice cream :)
      ***Keep in mind that that there are plastic parts do not touch them until the have cooled and rehardened! ( keep an eye on the plastic audio jacks they are not supose to droop)
      *** ovens don't always heat the same and the bake time may vary!!
      *** Do this at your own risk, It worked fine for me!
      The pi has been running 24/7 for 6 weeks without any further isssues!

      An Update: DE AC2HE,Andy First off I am also interested in experimenting with the modded TNC-X as well!

      The problems I had were defective boards,they are coming from China now & they don't test them.

      Specifically they had heat sensitivity problems with the CPU,probably
      poor soldering. Not equipped to work with(or even see)smt devices.
      Sent them back & MCM was very good about replacing them & reimbursed
      my cost to ship them back.

      Have one using Wheezy with Minicom & GPIB serial adapter with a TNC.

      The other set up with Bodhi Linux & using a USB to serial adapter.
      The Usb adapter shows up as /dev/ttyUsb0 in Wheezy you can use:
      "dmesg | grep tty" to display these devices. Note: Pi(O/S) does not support hot plug devices,have it inserted b-4 booting.

      Also have another sd card with Pibang linux,they are both derived from Raspbian base. Both install smoothly,Pibang is a late image
      from 12/26/12 & installed w/o error.

      Many of you may already be familiar with Linux & know that just as in windows there is more than one way to do things. Just posted some of my experiences in case they may help:)

At least to start, I suggest testers should be familiar with BPQ32, and have a basic knowledge of linux commands - this isn't really something for those new to either BPQ or linux to play with at this stage.
        The basic features are:
        Has been tested on Raspberry PI and Ubuntu running on a PC.
        BPQ32 compatible Node, includng the APRS Digi/Igate feature
        Uses standard bpq32.cfg
        Drivers for KISS, AXIP, BPQEther, Telnet, SCS Tracker, SCSPTC. I2C Driver for PITNC on the PI. Others to follow.
        Includes the BBS part of BPQMailChat (not chat).
        BBS Configuration and BBS/Node monitoring via a Web interface.
