      * NACCHO CHAIR:
PROGRESS REPORT ON CLOSING THE GAP PROVES BEST RESULTS ARE THROUGH COMMUNITY GROUPS

      - Analysis / Opinion

      NACCHO chair CTG update:
Progress report on Closing the Gap proves best results are through community groups

[NACCHO: National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation]
      http://nacchocommunique.com/2013/06/17/naccho-chair-ctg-updateprogress-report-on-closing-the-gap-proves-best-results-are-through-community-groups/
17 Jun 13: "The reason the Northern territory was on track
to meet some of its Close the Gap health targets was
because programs were being controlled by Aboriginal
Controlled Community Health organisations, the Chair of
the national organisation, Justin Mohamed said. ...
Mr Mohamed, the Chair of the National Community Controlled
Health Organisation (NACCHO) credits the better general
result in the Northern Territory to Aboriginal Community
controlled Health Organisations (ACCHO) and their peak
      body AMSANT."

      * THE STRINGER:
AUSTERITY CUTS HIT CLOSING THE GAP

      - Analysis / Opinion

The Stringer: Austerity cuts hit Closing the Gap
      http://thestringer.com.au/austerity-cuts-hit-closing-the-gap/
17 Jun 13: "It is correct that Australia too is feeling the
pinch of the global recession but as the world’s 12th
largest economy and with a resources mining boom still in
full swing there is little excuse for funding cuts to
Closing the Gap initiatives and initiatives addressing
homelessness. In the last six months, federally and
state-wide governments have terminated funding which has
hurt impoverished Aboriginal communities, that have
diminished Closing the Gap initiatives and that have
downsized services to the homeless (whose numbers are
      rising)."

      * NACCHO NEWS:
      NACCHO CEO APPOINTED TO NEW
ABORIGINAL MENTAL HEALTH AND SUICIDE PREVENTION ADVISORY GROUP

      - News

      NACCHO SEWB News:
NACCHO CEO appointed to new Aboriginal Mental Health and
      Suicide Prevention Advisory Group

[NACCHO: National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation]
      http://nacchocommunique.com/2013/06/18/naccho-sewb-news-naccho-ceo-appointed-to-new-aboriginal-mental-health-and-suicide-prevention-advisory-group/
18 Jun 13: "Pictured above NACCHO CEO Ms Lisa Briggs
appointed to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mental
Health and Suicide Prevention Advisory Group. ... NACCHO
as a member The Close the Gap Campaign today welcomed a
significant mental health milestone:  the establishment of
the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mental Health
and Suicide Prevention Advisory Group. The new ministerial
advisory body, co-chaired by Dr Tom Calma AO and Professor
Pat Dudgeon, is the first of its kind in Australia. ...
Close the Gap co-chair and Social Justice Commissioner,
Mick Gooda, said the group will help drive reform in mental
health and suicide prevention for Aboriginal and Torres
      Strait Islander people."

      * THE STRINGER:
SUICIDE PREVENTION PHONE APP DESIGNED FOR
      ABORIGINAL PEOPLE IN THE REMOTE

      - Analysis / Opinion

      The Stringer:
Suicide prevention phone app designed for
      Aboriginal people in the remote

      http://thestringer.com.au/suicide-prevention-phone-app-designed-for-aboriginal-people-in-the-remote/
17 Jun 13: "Aboriginal youth suicide, standalone from the
rest of the Australian population, has reached such levels
that it is often the highest rate of youth suicide in the
world. This phenomena has arisen during the last couple of
decades. Despite a number of Closing the Gap initiatives
arguing improved numbers in life-expectancy averages and
more Aboriginal children in education, the suicides are
climbing, and the average ages are getting younger.
Alongside the rise in Aboriginal suicides there has been a
rise in Aboriginal homelessness and in Aboriginal
      incarceration rates."

14 Jun 13: "Australia’s leading national Aboriginal health
organisation and Australia’s peak medical education body
have signed a landmark agreement aimed at increasing
medical student placements in Indigenous primary health
care settings. The Memorandum of Understanding between the

ways and adopt a healthy lifestyle is complex and requires
a multifaceted approach," Congress Ms Donna Ah Chee
A new Aboriginal youth sexual health education resource
package was launched last week in Alice Springs. The
package is part of the Central Australian Aboriginal

      http://www.eyretribune.com.au/story/1577266/poor-dental-health-impacts-sas-aboriginal-mums/?cs=12
17 Jun 13: "A three-year study into Indigenous oral hygiene
in South Australia has uncovered "horrifying"
discrimination against Aboriginal women with some dentists
refusing to see Aboriginal patients at all. Researchers
from the University of Adelaide surveyed 446 mums-to-be
who were pregnant with children of Aboriginal heritage
over a three year period from regional and metropolitan SA.
Not only did they all suffer multiple dental issues, their
issues were compounded by social problems such as
unemployment with a 90 per cent jobless rate among the
      group." By Michelle O'Rielly

from an NGO to fund the running costs of dialysis services
in a remote Aboriginal community in return for a $200,000
one-off infrastructure grant. This comes after the federal
government announced in 2011 there was $13 million
available for dialysis to people in remote Aboriginal
communities in light of the Central Desert Renal Study."
