New Paltz is the pits.    This is where the looney mayor decided he could go against
state law and simply marry sodomites.

The 22nd CD, for the folks who do not know, is currently
represented by Maurice Hinchey, who I would characterize
is one of the most, if not the most, leftist legislators in NYS.

The 22nd CD is "big" , encompassing all or parts of eight
counties and stretching from the City of Poughkeepsie in
Dutchess Co. (the Hudson Valley) and extending west covering all of Ulster Co. (Kingston, New Paltz, etc) and Greene Co., and into the 'Southern Tier' to include Binghamton in Broome Co, and Ithaca in Tioga Co, and portions of at four other counties.

In 2006, Hinchey ran unopposed (again), and while this CD
is gerrymandered like the rest of the CDs in New York, "on
paper" it offers a better opportunity than most for a Republican to win.

There will be a primary, with at least one other candidate,
the Rev. David Grate contesting for the Republican nomination (also the Conservative line, and a line on
the independent nominating body, the "Right to Life Party".

David was a Ron Paul delegate from the 22nd CD and was
a "member" of the social conservative wing of the Ron Paul
coalition.  He has been endorsed by the "NY Constitution
      Party" too.

At this point, I really have little knowledge of the capabilities
of either candidate, but it certainly is "healthy" that the GOP
has individuals interested in duking it out to give the voters
a choice both in a primary and general election.

At this point, I am familiar with a number of upcoming GOP
primary battles for other Congressional seats, including the
18th (Westchester/Rockland), the 19th (Westchester, Putnam, Orange, Dutchess, and Rockland), and the
20th (Albany Area).  Some of these contests offer a libertarian vs. a social conservative choice for the "party
      faithful".

      Stay tuned.

      Carl
