      CONSERVA-VOID
"On the conservative side, A-list speakers assemble at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) -- where Ann Coulter referred to former Sen. John Edwards with an anti-gay slur earlier this year. But CPAC doesn't have an online community.  And conservatives don't have anything quite like the Daily Kos blog, either."  -- San Francisco Chronicle  (from Chuck Muth's News & Views)

      RIGHTOBERFEST
"We conservatives are wasting great opportunities to organize and spread the word.  The Chron makes a good point about the higher level of enthusiasm and activity that the left has exhibited thus far. In answer to this, there is one thing for conservative bloggers on the near horizon that will help us catch up with the left's power on the Internet.

"A new conservative blogger's convention is coming in October and it promises to be the first in a series of such conventions that will help energize the right like the YearlyKos has energized the left.  The Conservative Leadership Conference is planning Rightoberfest, a large convention to be held in Reno, Nevada, this October. They promise some high-powered guests, panels and the like to rival a YearlyKos styled event. It promises to be an amazing weekend."  -- Blogger Warner Todd Houston, Newsbusters.org, 7/29/07 (from Chuck Muth's News & Views)

How unfortunate that the conservative movement should come up with a moniker like "Rightoberfest" for a conservative bloggers' convention. What were they thinking?! The Left is already calling conservatives Nazis, and now the CLC hands them something that can be warped into "Reich über allas" ... as if Oktoberfest wasn't Germanic enough. Am I the only one that sees flashes of red, white and black flags flying over gray uniformed goose-stompers passing in review? It's not a pretty image. I am just shaking my head in disbelief at this incredible lapse of judgment.

Nothing wrong with the conservative blogger conference -- sigh! -- it's the frickin' name they chose for it! How much more clearly did I have to explain that to y'all? The name is stupid, not the conference! I love the idea of the blogger's conference; I hate the stupid name they nailed onto it.

No doubt. And I'm not saying it does. What I am saying is that the Left will say it does. You can defend it all you want and get your undies in a bunch just because I pointed it out, but people really do need to consider all the ramifications of a thing.

Qwest, the telephone company, had started up with a campaign slogan a while back that was not well thought out. They used "Spirit of Service in Action." I wrote to them to suggest that there might be some "blowback" from unhappy customers and from competitors, who would twist the slogan to "Spirit of Service Inaction." They agreed with me, and first attempted to fix it by having the actors carefully enunciate the "in action," so it wouldn't sound like one word. But that didn't work out too well, so now they use just "Spirit of Service" as their slogan. They probably spent millions of dollars to come up with the first version, and millions more to change it over to the second version. Even marketing specialists can make mistakes. Maybe the first version came from the president of the company -- and everyone adored it (because the president came up with it, and no one was going to stick their neck out to say they didn't like it). All I'm saying is that you need to consider how a name you love can be corrupted and used in an awful way against you.

You can stop attacking the messenger now, 'cause I'm done trying to explain it to you.

P.S. I'm German too (one quarter English, Dad's side), and there are lots of Germans in my neck of the woods, and I've asked some of them what they thought about this issue, and they agree that the Left is going to pounce on it. Oh well ....
