What is REAL ID? The Real ID Act of 2005 would turn our state driver’s
licenses into a genuine national identity card and impose numerous
new burdens on taxpayers, citizens, immigrants, and state governments
while doing nothing to protect against terrorism. As a result, it is stirring
intense opposition from many groups across the political spectrum.

Cost of REAL ID Implementation: Estimated to cost states and individuals
      $23 billion over 10 years (source: Wired.com).

Reasons to oppose REAL ID: - Creates the largest single database about
U.S. people that has ever been created; - Creates the second national ID
card, after Social Security; - Increases the threat of identity theft; - Allows
for tracking of individuals, propelling us toward a surveillance state; - Will
increase the bureaucratic nightmare that already surrounds gaining a
driver's license; - Will cost of $23 billion over ten years; - Will do little to
      protect against terrorism.

The Good News: The Real ID Act does not directly change driver’s licenses.
Instead, it threatens the states by stating that the federal government will
not accept their citizens’ IDs unless the states change their laws.  As a
result, the Act cannot enter into effect unless the states change their laws
and appropriate funds. MAINE has already passed a resolution against the
      Act.

      TAKE ACTION!

      1. Check the status of the bills in your state's legislative body at
      http://www.realnightmare.org/states/13/ and at
http://www.realnightmare.org/news/105/. If there is legislation, e-mail your
State Rep. or State Senator to support that legislation.

      2. If there is no legislation, please contact the libertarian-leaning members
of your state legislature.  I list them at http://chelm.freeyellow.com/how.html.
Tell them that you're a member of the Republican Liberty Caucus and you'd
like them to draft legislation to repeal the REAL ID Act, as Maine did (see
      draft legislation at http://www.mainesenate.org/mitchell/realid.htm).

Thank you for fighting for a free society.

      Sincerely,
      Aaron
