      September E-News
      Cultural Equity
In 2016, FAI’s board of directors and staff released a Values Statement that continues to guide the organization regarding diversity, inclusion, access, and internationalism. These values are reflected in our strategic plan, program content, and resources provided for the extended folk music community. FAI continues to conduct board and staff training, is supporting board diversification training for each regional organization, and has commenced a year-long process to develop an overarching Cultural Equity Plan. Anyone with experience in cultural equity work or representing a marginalized community who is interested in advising FAI on the development of a Cultural Equity Plan is invited to fill out the cultural equity advisory interest form.
      Affinity Groups
As part of the process, this year’s conference will host a global summit focused on cultural equity, accompanied by affinity group meetings. Affinity groups are opportunities for people to gather based on shared identity, especially as it relates to minority or marginalized communities. Members and conference attendees are invited to provide input to help FAI determine what affinity groups to hold space for at this year's conference.
      Affinity Group Input
As a primer to all of these conversations and activities, a commissioned cultural equity webinar is being offered (see below).
Upcoming Webinar - Introduction to Cultural Equity
Introduction to Cultural Equity is presented by Folk Alliance International in partnership with Renaissance Management & Training Solutions, LLP. This webinar will engage, inspire, challenge, and provoke conversations related to diversity, inclusion, and parity to encourage all to become positive change agents in their community. The goal is to facilitate cultural enrichment, understanding, growth, and proficiency through the presentation of terms, definitions, and concepts. This webinar will provide tools and knowledge to pursue further education and work needed to achieve cultural equity in the extended folk music community. This is a free webinar.

      FAI Fall/Winter Interns
As of 2014, FAI has been providing paid internship opportunities as on-the-job training, course-related practical experience, and professional development for college students who are interested in the music industry, folk music community, event planning, and arts administration.
Elizabeth comes to FAI as our Conference Planning Intern. She will work directly with the Director of Operations, Jennifer Roe.

After almost four years of working for Disney in Orlando, FL, Elizabeth made her way back home to Kansas City. She is no stranger to the arts and music world. She has years of experience tour managing, stage managing, producing, as well as performing on stage. Moving back to pursue a career in voice acting, she also wants to remain fully immersed in the music industry and hopes to expand her knowledge and appreciation of different genres of folk through her internship with FAI.
Membership and Technology intern, Zac Cafferty will be working closely with Membership Manager, Jerod Rivers.

He is originally from Chicago but moved to Kansas City in 2002 where he fell in love with the caring and open community.  He met his wife during his freshman year at KU and shares two children with her. His love for music has been with him for as long as he can remember and was never curbed by his self-proclaimed terrible voice or inability to stay on beat. Having completed Salesforce contact management administrator training, he is looking forward to combining his love for music, database systems, and a positive work environment in this internship.
