OQC's next event will take place this Sunday, October 5, 2003.

      Yellow - 2.7 km (9 controls)

      Orange - 3.8 km (11 controls)

      Green - 4.3 km (12 controls)

Map is 1:5,000 with 10 ft contours, mapped by Dave Linthicum in 1999.

Please check the end of this message for stunningly detailed
      directions.

I would also like to draw your attention to the JROTC event taking
place at the same venue this Saturday. Mike Dvorsky can undoubtedly
still use O technique instructors who can then run the course of their
choosing. The courses of the same colour will presumably be identical
on the two days but that still leaves plenty of scope for running
Saturday if you can't on Sunday and the warm fuzzy feeling engendered
by teaching O technique to high schoolders also has its value.
      Details follow.

"October 4, 2003 - Kings Landing State Park, Huntingtown,MD: High
School JROTC orienteering meet hosted by the Patuxent High School
NJROTC Orienteering Team (the 2003 National JROTC Orienteering
Champions). Open to all High School JROTC students only. $6 per
competitor entry fee. Entry fee covers basic orienteering instruction
by the Naval Academy Orienteering Team and members of the Quantico
Orienteering Club, and any two courses. A third course may be run for
$2. There will be individual course and team score-O awards. White,
Yellow, Orange, Brown, and 6 person team Score O courses will be
offered. Individual courses offered 9:00 AM to 1:30 PM. Score O starts
at 1:00 PM. Basic orienteering training available from 9:00 to 11:30
AM. QOC members: We are looking for volunteer instructors to teach
basic skills to about 200 high schoolers new to the sport of
orienteering. Volunteers will receive free lunch, can run any offered
course for free after instruction, and the good feeling of helping
many new high schoolers learn about the sport of orienteering! For
information contact Commander Mike Dvorsky, Patuxent High School
      NJROTC, at PATUXENT-MD@..."

      Directions to Kings Landing:

      From Washington DC Beltway:

Kings Landing Park is about 35 minutes from the DC beltway exit for Rt
4 (Pennsylvania Ave). Take Rt 4 east/southeast towards Upper Marlboro
from the beltway for 25-30 minutes, to Old Town Road (Rt 524) west,
which is on the right about 7 1/2 miles south of the town of Dunkirk,
and about 5 miles south of the intersection of Rts 2 and 4. The
turnoff for Rt 524 is marked by a large sign for Kings Landing Park.
After less than 1/2 mile on Rt 524, turn right again onto Rt 521 and
continue straight onto Huntingtown Road. At the four way stop continue
straight onto Kings Landing Road which will dead end into the park.
Follow signs in the park to the registration area.

      From the North (Baltimore Area):

Take Route 3 south towards Upper Marlboro. Route 3 becomes US Route
      301. Continue south on Route 301to the exit for MD Route 4 south
(towards Prince Frederick). Take MD Route 4 south to Old Town Road (Rt
      524) west which is on the right about 7 1/2 miles south of Dunkirk,
and about 5 miles south of the intersection of Rts 2 and 4. The
turnoff for Rt 524 is marked by a large sign for Kings Landing Park.
After less than 1/2 mile on Rt 524, turn right again onto Rt 521 and
continue straight onto Huntingtown Road. At the four way stop continue
straight onto Kings Landing Road which will dead end into the park.
Follow signs in the park to the registration area. Drive time is
estimated at 1 1/2 hours from Balitmore.

      From South and West:

Take Rt. 17 North from Norfolk, head toward Fredericksburg, VA / Fort.
A.P. Hill. Turn right onto US 301 north at Port Royal. Continue across
the Potomac River (Nice Bridge, which is a toll on your way home
only). About 4 miles after crossing the bridge, there will be a sign
pointing to Patuxent River Naval Air Station on the right. This is MD
route 234. Take a right turn onto 234 east. After about 5 1/2 miles
take a left onto Trinity Church Road. After about 2 1/2 miles take a
slight left to stay on Trinity Church Road. About 3 miles later
Trinity Church Road becomes Olivers Shop Road. Stay straight to go
onto MD-231/Burnt Store Road. Continue to follow MD-231 for about 16
miles. Turn left onto MD-4/MD-2 North (Solomons Island Road). After
about 6 miles, turn left onto MD 524/Old Town Road. There should be a
Kings Landing Park sign marking this turn off. After about 1/4 mile
turn left onto MD-521 and then stay straight on Huntingtown Road. At
the four way stop continue straight onto Kings Landing Road which will
dead end into the park. Follow signs in the park to the registration
area. Drive time is estimated at 4 hours from Norfolk.
