      Hello all,

Is there anywhere in the MD/DC/VA area where I can go and buy things
like knickers and gaiters and thumb compasses and stuff like that? I
would like to try stuff on/out before I buy, so at this time I can't
      do the Internet route.

      Any help is appreciated.

        Joe,

Unfortunately, the short answer is no. There isn't any retailer nearby that stocks specialised orienteering gear. The club store (contact info is on the web site) may be able to help you with some things but can't hold a candle to the selection of the specialised O vendors. One of which will generally attend any A meet so most people buy gear they aren't sure of their size for or need to handle for other reasons at A meets. You may be able to borrow/try on some club member's personal gear (I, for one, would have no problem with letting you try out my thumb compasses) but selecting O gear is undeniably harder than it would be if REI would just devote some floor space to O.
