      AL-LADHI (الَّذِي )= WHO/THAT/WHICH/ONE (masculine)*
(alif, lam with shaddah, dhal, ya')

      * in arabic, as in spanish and many other languages, words have a "gender." Al-ladhi is used to refer back to words that are "masculine" or that are neutral and without a particular gender -- to generic words or people. The words are not necessarily masculine, but "masculine" is arbitrarily used to describe that category of words. The word "al-lati" is used for feminine words.
