THE 7TH ANNUAL OAKLAND INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

“BAY AREA CYPHER” is a performance documentary that blends live freestyle presentations with short interviews to document the unique evolution of Hip Hop in the San Francisco Bay Area. The project expands beyond stereotypical presentations of commercialized Rap music, giving viewers a glimpse of the amazing creative energy of the Hip Hop Cypher and discusses how this improvisational freestyle is a form spiritual and communal energy.
The documentary has screened at “Her Story: A Celebration of Women’s Month” at Laney College in Oakland, CA and at the 10th Annual Allied Media Conference in Detroit, MI. The piece won first place in the documentary category of the 3C Solutions California Student Video and Film Competition in 2008.
“Bay Area Cypher” includes interviews and performances by:
Davey D, D.A.T of the Attik, Deuce Eclipse, Dawn Elissa-Fisher, Fiyawata, Ise Lyfe, Jeff Chang, Marcel Diallo, Traci Bartlow, Keba Konte, Ras K’Dee and others.
The 1st Oakland International Film Festival was born in 2002 at the Grand Lake Theater. Each year the festival hosts panel discussions, workshops and special events at various venues to promote the independent filmmaker.

Idris Hassan, is an independent media editor/producer, a visual artist, and a media justice advocate. Ms. Hassan received her BA degree in Mass Communications and Photojournalism from Cal State Hayward and a Certificate Degree in Digital Video Arts from Berkeley City College. She has worked as an entertainment journalist, an editorial assistant and has contributed writings various to publications. Ms. Hassan is a graduate of the First Voice Radio Apprenticeship program and has worked with Hard Knock Radio, The Morning Show, and Full Circle Radio Magazine on Pacifica Radio Station KPFA in Berkeley, CA. She has produced projects for various Bay Area artists and community groups.
