The new show “Art as Activism” at the Berkeley City College Jerry Adams Gallery is a dynamic collection of diverse educational artworks by the board members of WEAD--  Women Environmental Artists Directory.

The photographs of installations and 2d works on environmental, social justice and educational concerns are a direct reflection of WEAD’s mission statement: to focus on women’s unique perspectives and collaborate internationally to further the field and understanding of ecological and social justice art.

WEAD does not prescribe to a single definition for ecofeminism or ecoart, nor one set of cultural, political, or social beliefs. Instead, WEAD celebrates a spectrum of differences under the colorful collective umbrella called ecofeminist art. Here women speak in their own voices, define their own work and map its place in the world. Together we work toward a just, sane, healthy world for all.

Several of the artists work in and with community to create large installations, often in gardens and about food. Other individual works focus on giving voice to endangered species, world water and ocean pollution, climate change, social justice and urgent environmental issues. All have an important educational component, a positive force in this presentation where the show will be exposed to young students.

At a time when conditions that support human life on this planet are in danger, this show is a refreshing and important exhibit to alert the younger generation to urgent issues through creative works that give hope and bring attention to possible solutions.
