Group Description

The Ancient Coinage Discussion Group of Record.
Serious discussion of ancient coinages and their historical and cultural context. The illustrated coin is Roman Republican circa 70 BC, in the aftermath of the Social Wars, and illustrated the hope that the new alliance would be under the care of Honos and Virtus (Honor and Virtue). Princeps will strive to achieve these timeless ideals.
Greek, Byzantine, Roman, and Roman provincial coin discussion dominates, though discussion of any ancient coinage or related culture is welcome.
Anyone interested in the group topic is welcome - regardless of their present level of knowledge. Senior members recognize that knowledge of classical coinage and civilizations is not instinctive - it must be learned - and they are grateful for those who have gone before for sharing their knowledge and will cheerfully do the same for neophytes.
This is a moderated list, meaning messages initially will be reviewed by the moderator(s) for content before being released to the list. The review is to eliminate spam or offensive behavior - it is not a test of anyone's numismatic knowledge. List members with a proven record of constructive input will be granted un-moderated status. However offensive posts or posts contrary to list rules will result in moderation or banishment.
The list rules may be found at the related link below.
