lets consider loyal penelope, wife of odysseus.  how old was she when the suitors insisted upon her hand?
its given that odysseus was a generation older than achilles.  if the latter was 20, odysseus may have been 40, when the trojan war began.
when odysseus finally got home, he and his faithful wife may have been 60!  apparently, odysseus was the same generation as jason, heracles, and theseus - those that achilles saw sail away as a boy.  theseus fought against the injustice of king minnos of crete.  this points to not long after 10,000 bce for the trojan war.  even with longer lifespans, its hard to place the trojan war even as late as 5500 bce.  it seems more reasonable to accept the main events and characters as true, and challenge the date assigned.
troy seemed more advanced than greece, but kindred in race and culture.  paris had no problem navigating to sparta, but the greeks had to seek a pilot to find golden troy.

recall, that achilles had the centaur chiron for a tutor.  this makes it difficult to accept the late date of about 1170 bce for the trojan war.  there were giant warriors who fought at troy, like ajax the elder.
instead of disbelieving the events, maybe better to question the dating.  this is true in the bible also, for giants were mentioned from joshua to david, yet more recent dates were assigned to their times.  when all of mankind were giants, there was no need to mention giants.  it was the era when men of both sizes were alive, that giants were mentioned.  perhaps 6 footers, with those of 12 ft.  the trojan war was during this time of transition.
