This (below or at link) is a good and very recent map from the Orient Express which now operates the tourist train.  Note Cuzco on the map as well.

The train from Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu takes about an hour and a half. It is a fascinating journey with the trip along the Urubamba River gorge.  View are of the mountains through the high glass and the changing landscape/vegetation from high Andes down into Amazon jungle.

The early explorers and writers were obviously doing this by a combination of horse/mule back, hiking, and river rafting.    Their account are valuable for so much, but how they experienced distances may no longer be applicable.  ~  Judith Marie
