Are you sure, as the website says "any size"? The 40lb thrust on the
bow would be preferable as I could select the MK power drive model,
it isn't available in a 30lb thrust model. What would be the
consequence of using the heavier thrust version?

          Micheal,

I have used the 40lb MK Endura and currently use a 50lb MK both on the bow
and less than 48 lenght shaft ( I think they are 36-40 inches ) However, I
do not use the bow mount supplied by Portabote.

Instead I mount it on the side of the bow without a mount. For pics, go to
the folder called BowFloor in the photo section the forum. A few others have
mounted thier trolling motors this way and use a small piece of wood under
the clamp to protect the boat. Keep in mind that this is not a method
sanctioned by Portabote, but it has worked for me for a few years now with
          no damage to the boat.

It's difficult to slow troll with the 6hp Nissan unless you are deep
trolling. When near weedy areas, I like to go super slow and be as quiet as
I can, so I use the trolling motor for that purpose.

Are you sure, as the website says "any size"? The 40lb thrust on the
bow would be preferable as I could select the MK power drive model,
it isn't available in a 30lb thrust model. What would be the
consequence of using the heavier thrust version?

Rick - thank you. I will llook at the picture you have posted. I am particularly concerned about weeds fouling the prop of the 6hp when slow trolling but don't want to have the burden of transporting/setting up two motors each time I head out.
I am not used to using a small gas engine, but i understand the 4 cycle is very quiet. So for me it is a question of whether or not it will foul continously.

            Regards, Michael

Hi Rick, from the picks to confirm you are using a transom mount electric, mounted on a 2x4 board to the side of the boat?

How do you find the level of control realized with this configuration?

Alternatively, have you tried mounting the trolling motor on the transom beside your gas motor - would there be sufficient room to mount both? Thinking that a long shaft electric would sit above the housing of the gas motor so steering control would be uneffected for either engine.

I look forward to hearing back from you on your perspective.

                  Thank you - Michael

                  Rick

Are you sure, as the website says "any size"? The 40lb thrust on the
bow would be preferable as I could select the MK power drive model,
it isn't available in a 30lb thrust model. What would be the
consequence of using the heavier thrust version?

Thank you. In follow-on, can an adjustable long shaft 40lb thrust
trolling moter be mounted to the transom at the same time a 6hp
                    motor is mounted?

Don, thank you and everyone for the thoughtful and helpful responses.

I am set with my decision and will go with a 6hp Merc. and a Vector
                      3x 55lb w/ a 42" shaft.

We have a local Bass Pro big fisshing sale/event starting the 11th
and a Toronto Sportmans show the same week so this will be Dday for
finding a good price. Just saved $30. on a 8 amp dual port charger
so I am starting off on the right road.

I am trib stealheading and doing some ice fishing now until the ice
on the lakes breaks up and the seasons open. Can't wait to fish from
                      a boat for a change!

                      Regards, Michael

better to tilt up the motor that you are not using to avoid the

Hi Don, thank you again for your prior reply to my query.

In follow-on, have you ever tried to mount your Vector on the hull
side up front near the bow or have you found it unnecessary given
boat size to have a front mount troller?

Also do you find you need a long, 40"+ shaft to clear the housing on
                        your gas engine?

                        Regards, Michael

The Vector is way too large and heavy to mount anywhere but the transom. There is plenty of room on the side of the transom for the electric without interfering with the gas motor. The 40 inch shaft was the shortest available for for this motor, so I just adjust it up when I am in shallow water. The tall shaft also is nice to standup and steer. I often fish standing up while casting.

If I fish the shallow shoreline, I prefer a small bow motor. I use a 30lb clamped on the side of the bow. http://donsplace.smugmug.com/gallery/493810

                            Don,

Thank you. I agree, I just saw the Vector today and it way to large

ML isn't offering a 30lb motor so it, it looks like I will be going
for the 40lb Maxima. I am not planning on using the motor for
anythin other than slow trolling when it is mounted up front so the
40lb thrust shouldn't be a factor. As a transom mount the 40lb will
                            work well.

Your pictures are great and very helpful in assisting me in how to
                            approach the bow/hull side mount.

You mentioned MK did a modification to your 30 motor to make it
                            work, what did they do?

                            Thanks again.

                            Michael

The small MK Endura has a feature so that the control head can be swiveled around 180 degrees. That way it can be a transom or a bow mount. I think the idea was really for an inflatable mounting... Front or Back. Anyway it makes an easy modification by removing only one bolt, turning, and replacing the bolt. Look for this on the motor you buy, or you may have to get an actual bow motor. Otherwise it will be backwards. This feature was mentioned on the box but not the user manual, but after I understood it, then changing the propeller direction was easy.

My MK Vector is a 24 volt unit and it weights a bunch. It can really cut through weeds well.
