      But, my side light on the trailer doesn't work.  I believe it's the same problem.

      I had a problem with the lights on mine when I built it. It's a grounding issue, you need to sand off the paint especially where the rear lights bolt to the frame of the trailer.  Where the threaded part of the brake light inserts into the trailer that should touch bare metal "at the base of the treads". Also all areas where the grounding wires attach to the frame of the trailer need to touch bare metal.  It drove me crazy for 2 days!  Good luck.
