Group Description

This is a study group for those interested in the unique and diverse costumes, weapons, horses and armor of the late 16th, 17th and early 18th century Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. This is the heyday of the Polish winged hussar cavalry and their many victories in dozens of battles across Eastern and Central Europe.
The purpose of this site is to discuss 17th century Polish militaria, and through the photo album section, collect and catalogue the costumes, weapons and armor. Acceptable references will be period iconography such as: portaits of nobles, etchings, drawings and battle paintings and sketches, photos of original items from museums and private collections.
19th and 20th century paintings and photos will not be considered credible references, but could be placed in a separate album, and the accuracy of the content debated with the help of period references.
Period references will be categorized according to exact or approximate dates. This data will aid as references for the development of accurate costumes and kits for the growing 17th century Polish and East European reenacting and living history community.
