      Dear Seniors,

      I hope all is well with you.  I am here with some a problem to share with you and I hope you will not mind to spare a few minutes for me.

      I am developing an accounts database.  The initial stage is General Journal which has Master-Detail form consisting of two tables ‘JOURNAL_M’ and ‘JOURNAL_D’.  All transaction will be entered into these tables through JOURNALS.FMB and daily transactions will be sent to General Ledger through pressing Data Posting push button.

      The below procedures are working 100% in SQL*PLUS but when I call them from program units in push button’s trigger WHEN-BUTTON-PRESSED they do not work here.  When I click on the button it acts as Commit_form’s function.  For example FRM-40400 Transaction complete: 1 records applied and saved – if there is no any changes in the form then FRM-40401: No changes to save message appears.

      When I got this result then I disabled the procedures and wrote a cursor in the trigger directly, but again I got the same result.  The procedures are as below:

      No 1.
      /* this procedure is written to check the current date in the table(LEDGER_DATE), if it exists then deletes all transaction which are equal to current date.
      */
      PROCEDURE DataCheck4Ledger IS
      --DECLARE
      cursor mycur is
      select cdate from LEDGER_DATE where cdate= to_date(:cDATE,'dd-mm-yy');
      mrec mycur%rowtype;

      BEGIN
                  open mycur;
                  loop
                              fetch mycur into mrec;
                              exit when mycur%notfound;
                              if mrec.cdate=to_date(:cDATE,'dd-mm-yy') then
                                          delete from ledger where mrec.cdate=to_date(:cDATE,
      'dd-mm-yy');
                              end if;
                              commit;

      end loop;
                  close mycur;
                  EXCEPTION
                  WHEN OTHERS THEN
                  MESSAGE('Error.....................!');
      END;

      No 2.
      /* this procedure is written to insert the daily transaction into general ledger (LEDGER) from JOURNAL_M  and JOURNAL_D.
      */
      PROCEDURE TransferToLedger IS

      cursor mycur is
      SELECT M.VOUCH_NO,m.GRNO,m.TRAN_DATE,m.CURRENCY,m.CDATE,
      d.CODE,d.DESCRIP,d.DEBIT,d.CREDIT
      FROM JOURNAL_M M, JOURNAL_D D
      WHERE D.VOUCH_NO=M.VOUCH_NO and m.cdate=to_date(:cdate,'dd-mm-yy')
      order by CODE;

      Mrec mycur%rowtype;
      begin
                  open mycur;
                  loop
                              fetch mycur into mrec;
                              exit when mycur%notfound;
                              insert into LEDGER
                              (vouch_no,code,DESCRIP,grno,tran_date,currency,debit,credit,cdate)
      values (mrec.vouch_no,mrec.code,mrec.descrip,mrec.grno,
      mrec.tran_date,mrec.currency,mrec.debit,mrec.credit,mrec.cdate);
                  end loop;
                  commit;

      close mycur;
      END;

      I attached the form JOURNALS.FMB and structures of tables, I will be grateful to you if you could spare a few minutes for me to solve this problem.

      Many thanks and God bless you.

      With best wishes,

        Answer to your question is:
        FRM-40400 and FRM-40401 are occurring because you have called "commit"
        within your procedure. This is a natural behavior and not a problem.

        Apart from your question, I have found many things to be highlighted
        but the biggest problem I have seen in your code (which depicts that
        you still need improvement in understanding the concept of
        transactions) is that you have used "commit" statement in most (or
        all) routines you have written to accomplish a single result.

        I mean, your object all-in-all is to post transactions to Ledger table
        so there must be no commit unless the process of journal posting is
        complete. Imagine if the form crashes (or any other problem which
        stops application) after "DataCheck4Ledger" and before calling
        "TransfertoLedger". What do you think will happen to the data
        consistency then?

        There were a few other issues I wanted to talk about but well the
        response is already too messy so I need to stop here.

        Conclusion: Try to have "Save" (commit) called by the user, or if
        necessary to include in the code, to it (commit) at the end of
        business transaction and somewhere centralized in your code.

              it simply delete the data from ledger table

              what is the problem with this.
              if any then tell me in dtl.

                                              Mansoor Noway to change the character set of oracle database. Just create new database. During creation you can identified your character set and national language set = UTF-8.

                                                  I wana ask 2 simple  questions.
                                                  No1: I make Oracle Initialization Parameter file  PFile from SPfile and then  I change the Default Path of  SPFile for some security reoson.
                                                  Now I want that when oracle starts they read the PFile  and in PFile I only write the SPfile path .
                                                  Please tell me the correct  way of writing the path of SPFile to Pfile.
                                                  No2. Please tell me the way how I see the user trace file.  and implement this.

                                                     Oracle by default searches in Initialization Parameters files in following order:
                                                    - spfileDBNAME at Oracle_Home/Database
                                                    - spfile at Oracle_Home/Database
                                                    - initDBNAME at Oracle_Home/Database

                                                    But If you have changed the path you can issue below command to read from specified path

                                                    STARTUP PFILE = 'D:/abc/pfiledbname.ora'

                                                    If your asking .trc files, which are created at udump folder, then you need TKPROF utility to convert trace files in readable format.
                                                    Check the link below for using TKPROF.

                                                      now i reconnect sys as sysdba
                                                      ALTER SESSION SET SQL_TRACE = false;

                                                      Now in commant promt I write

                                                      H:\>tkprof D:\oracle\product\10.2.0\admin\rock\udump\rock_ora_4844.trc D:\oracle\product\10.2.0\admin\rock\udump\output.txt sys=no

                                                      According to above case above 2 queries should be included in output.txt file but when i see the output.text file above 2 queries are not shown. Please tell me the reason because sql_trace is true that time.
                                                      Thanks again
