      Hello Lynley,
                            Ref. your latest note.
The village of MINTLAW is 10 miles inland (West) of Peterhead. This is farming country although quite a few "landsmen" came off the land to try their luck at Sea.
I believe you could be apprenticed at 14 years of age for the sea in those days.
I don't think Pigot's Directory would help you much with Robert Kean unless he was a Shipmaster. It only lists shipmasters. What you would need to find out would be his Seaman's Ticket Number. You local LDS Family HIstory Centre could help you get the relevant microfilm. Firstly you would get the Ticket Number listed by searching "Robert Kean" alphabetically. THen you can request the film of that particular ticket. The ticket should give various details about the person involved. Wade (Buchan) has done a lot of work with Seaman's Tickets, he might be able to give you better advice.

                            Hope this helps....................Alex Ritchie
      Hi Alex
Just a we note to say thankyou very much for your help it will help a great deal ,I now have E-Mailed Wade and we will see what he comes up with , Also it now makes me wonder if those names we were trying to find is a farm or estate how can we find that out
When the villiage of Mintlaw being a farming country

          Well Hi There Alex
Thankyou very much for this I new some of it but not all .
It was funny that you should E Mail me , because I plained to contact  you today.
Last night we were at our F.H.L. trying to get this seamens ticket sorted , what they have ask  me to ask you
if you could give us a little more detail of to what it is listed under
IS IT UNDER GREAT BRITAIN , OR SOMETHING ELSE
THEY PRINTED OF 10 PAGES OF THE COMPT , BUT WE COULD NOT FIND A [ K] ON ITS OWN
When I looked again at the 1861 cencus, the way I read it said CHRISTINA KEAN   [ HEAD] 23 seamens wife [  AT SEA]
SO WOULD THAT MEAN THAT ROBERT WAS AT SEA AT THE TIME THE CENCUS WERE TAKEN , MAY BE THERE IS ANOTHER
CENCUS FOR THE SEAMEN AT SEA YOU MAY BE ABLE TO FIND THAT
OR MAYBE THIS WOULD HELP FIND THE SHIP

I am searching the Birnie family in Peterhead and was interested in the two Birnie children shown on lair A77, Eliza & Alexander. would you know what the connection was between the Kean family and the Birnie's. Or could you or perhaps another list member advise me how I would locate the names of the parents of the children?

You'd be surprised how many Benzie/s families there are in Aberdeenshire/Banffshire/Morayshire.

My grandfather, Thomas Matthew Benzies was born at 4 Love Lane, Peterhead in December 1893. His mother was Isabella Benzies who was born in Strichen. What I can see from the various records is that the Benzie/s families come from Rothes in Morayshire in 1770 and spread out from there. There is a website run from Judy Schramm in Australia which includes 21 families in all but omitting those who went to Canada but has only two of the 18th century families so they may all join up!. It is ironical that a distant part of the family may have lived in the same street!.

Have you checked the 1881 census for Peterhead?. The Benzies families appear to recorded back to the mid-18th century and then the name may have been Baynies before that time, it depends on how the name Benzie/s is pronounced and may have a silent 'z' (do you have any information on this?). What I need is a Benzie/s who took part in the 1715 or 1745 Jacobite Rebellions but no luck yet. I am told that Isaac Benzies' department store that was in Aberdeen up to the 1960s is a relative but I have just started looking at that. Because my great-great-grandfather, George Gordon Benzies, had between 13 and 17 children by 6 or 7 wives it makes the research long, but I have spent 20 years so I have quite a lot of information but am still looking for two of his sons and one daughter. Finally, I don't know if you have come across the name Lorna Moon, real name Helen Nora Wilson Low who came from Strichen and is a Benzies descendant and ended up in Hollywood as a script writer for MGM during the Silent Movies era.

Do you know where James Benzies came from?.

                Looking forward to your reply.

Thank you for your reply. I could not find your e-mail address so can you send it to me, thanks.

                      Looking forward to your reply
                      ----- DAVID -- -- My E Mail Address Is  i.l.tilbury@...
And I live in Dunedin, South Island, New Zealand.
James Benzie came from Peterhead , born 1852
Parents are William Benzie and Margaret Beverly
Now what brothers did you grandfather have
Its funny that that they lived only three houses from each other

This is interesting, I am researching the Benzie/s line and my grandfather was born in Love Lane, Peterhead.
                      DAVID
It was a great surprise to find someone else with the Benzie name in there family tree
I have a James Benzie , who married Ann Kean  on the 25th of April 1875 at Peterhead
Im not shore what children they had , but I think at less a boy and a girl
Im not shore of names but may be Maggie and Jason but that may be wrong
                      There may be other children
Now Ann , her parents are Robert Kean and Helen Kean [ maiden name SCOTT]
When Anns brother  James died in New Zealand , it said in his will that money was to go to his
sister Ann Benzie wife of James Benzie , OF 12 LOVE LANE , PETERHEAD , ABERDEENSHIRE , SCOTLAND.
Now in 1895 Helen Scott Kean died at the age of 84 at Love Lane
Ann Benzie or Kean, died December  1934 at the age of 80 at ABERDEEN
                      James Benzie died April 21 1901 aged 48 [ AT SEA ]
