I'm still searching for the birth and parents of this Robert Baigrie.
He was probably born c1750 His family were Episcopalian and he was a
life long friend of the Rev Skinner, who I believe preached in
Peterhead around that time. He went to sea as a cabin boy and suffered
great privations in the Arctic?? So it was possibly a whaling ship. In
ant event he progressed to being the Captain of a West Indiaman
sailing to Jamaica. He was a great fried of the Forbes family, who were
I know ship owners, but can find no records of any vessels he was ever
I know he married a London girl called Jane Hadden who may have died
at sea in childbirth of his daughter Jane Baigrie and who much later
was a contributor to the costs of the New Harbour walls in Peterhead
where she later lived and died.
He came back to retire in the 1780s at Rora Mill in Longside, before
moving on to Midgarty in Kildonan, Sutherland, where he married
Williamina Sutherland and had 6 children. He died in 1809.
There is quite a bit of this his history is in "Memorabilia Domestica"
by the Rev. Donald Sage. That's about all I know of this chap any help
would be greatly appreciated.
