Thank you very much for your reply Elizabeth and the information.

I would be very interested in the information you have and would appreciate
any information that Neil may have.

I will endeavour to track that book down also.

      with my best wishes,

      Hi Colin,

The definitive work is Neil Dickson, Brethren in Scotland 1838-2000: a
social study of an evangelical movement, Paternoster Press 2002. My copy
      is
at work so I can't check the name you want. Even if it isn't there, it
would be possible for me to contact Neil and ask if he knows anything.

Briefly, the Peterhead assembly of the Open Brethren came into being out
      of
the Revival of 1859-60 in NE Scotland - many converts being dissatisfied
with the contemporary church scene (and I suspect some churches were not
too happy with what they saw as over-enthusiasm and possible wrong
      doctrine
      on the part of converts).

I have an interest too because my great-grandfather James Gordon was
converted in a Brethren gospel meeting in the 1880s - a meeting he and
      some
friends had gone to disrupt. If you are interested I can send you an
account of that meeting (by one of his life-long friends) which gives the
      flavour.
