      Dear colleagues,

below please find an announcement for a Summer
      Academy, the
      Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin's Working Group
      Modernity and Islam is
co-organizing with the Swedish Institute in
I kindly ask you to spread and forward the information
      about the summer
academy among scholars you consider to be a good
      candidate as well as to
institutions which might host scholars who are working
      in the thematic
field of the academy. We would be especially grateful
      if you could also
encourage applications by young scholars from the
      Middle and Near

      Yours sincerely,

      PS Please excuse double postings.

The Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin's Working Group
      Modernity and Islam,
      in cooperation with
the Swedish Institute in Alexandria, invites
      applications for an
      international Summer
      Academy on the theme:

The Summer Academy is scheduled for August 29
      -September 8, 2004 at the
      Swedish Institute
in Alexandria, Egypt and will be chaired by Dr.
      Friederike Pannewick
      (Free University
Berlin). 24 young scholars will be given the
      opportunity to present
and discuss their current research, while a group of
      leading scholars
from the field of Comparative Literature and Near
      Eastern Literatures
      will act as tutors.

The Summer Academy will focus on three issues: The
      first focus will be
on questions of literary theory and methodology
      concerning the concepts
of national literatures and world literature.
The term world literature does not point to a canon of
      exemplary works,
      but rather to a new
prerequisite of literary production in the context of
This section will have to tackle the paradoxical
      phenomenon that the
idea of world literature was developed in Europe by
      Goethe at the same
time as concepts of national literature emerged in
      European Romanticism.
In our reflection on various theories of world
      literature, the focus
will be on the simultaneity of drawing and crossing
      borders. To what
extent can these developments, concepts, and literary
      terms also be
applied outside their European place of origin or be
from other perspectives? The second focus is on
      literary mobility in
space and language, on issues associated with
      Diaspora, exile and
minorities, and facets of multilingualism. Relevant
      aspects are the
hegemonial potential of language, hybrid forms of
      language (Kanaksprak,
Franglais, etc.), the homogenization of literary forms
      versus the
disappearance of certain other forms, and problems of
      translation. The
third focus is on the mobility of literary (and maybe
      also performative
and visual) forms and genres. During processes of
      transfer, not only the
receiving culture but also the transferred aesthetic
      form itself
changes. Post-colonial theory has made some very
      interesting points
toward gaining a better understanding of contemporary
literatures; but the underlying concept of
an exclusive dichotomy of colonial, i.e., European
      ,powers and colonized
cultures runs the risk of missing the crucial
      multilateral relationships
between various non-European literatures, like the
      Arabic and
Latin-American literatures. And it neglects the
      colonies' multiple
repercussions on the colonizers. The Summer Academy
      will be held within
      the overall
framework of the project "Cultural Mobility in Near
      Eastern Literatures"
      (supported by the
German Federal Ministry of Education and Research),
      which focuses on the
diverse processes of transfer, exchange, and
      interaction between the
literatures of the Near East and other world

Participants receive a stipend covering travel and
expenses. The program addresses doctoral and
      postdoctoral researchers in
Comparative Literature, Middle Eastern and other
      philologies, and
historians, anthropologists, and sociologists with an
      interest in
literary studies and in opening up Comparative Studies
      beyond the
limitations of national or regional perspectives. The
      researchers' work
should be clearly relevant to the theme(s) of
the summer academy. The working language is English.
      The application,
consisting of a curriculum vitae, a five-page outline
      of the project the
applicant is currently working on, with a brief
      summary thereof, and two
names of referees (university faculty members) should
      be submitted and
received, in English, by April 15, 2004 to:
