      Dear friends,
I would like to announce another non degree scholarship program from East-West Center, Changing Faces Women's Leadership Program 2006. The theme is “Women's Political Empowerment and Civic Engagement in Asia, the Pacific, and the United States.” The program will consider how women’s leadership can contribute to the sustainability and well-being of their communities and the region as they participate in elections for local, provincial, and national offices, and assume leadership positions in government ministries and civil society organizations. The program will include the following activities:
Each participant will be asked to identify a priority issue, either for her organization or her community, and to outline ways in which she sees herself exercising leadership to address the issue.
      Honolulu Seminar
      July 9-16, 2006
Workshops will cover topics including communication, team-building, organizational planning, and models of leadership in differing cultural contexts. Drawing on East-West Center and community expertise, participants will meet with specialists and practitioners to explore a variety of leadership case studies. In addition, community resource persons and local site visits will highlight the theme of sustainable development. Participants will formulate action plans addressing their priority issues and make short presentations on their plans.
      Thailand Study Tour
      July 17-23, 2006
To further explore women's leadership in the Asia Pacific context, participants will engage in a group study tour to Thailand. The program will include professional meetings in Bangkok, as well as a visit to a community development project in rural Thailand.
Follow-up Refine action plan relating to the critical issue and identify measurable steps to be taken to address the issue. Maintain regular contact with program staff and fellow participants through the program website and listserve and provide updates on action plan progress.
Costs for participation in Honolulu and for the study tour (round-trip airfare, housing, program-related meals, ground transportation, program materials, and a modest per diem) will be provided by the East-West Center. Selected participants' organizations are encouraged to participate in cost-sharing if possible. Please note that selected participants are responsible for their own visa application fees.
The program seeks professional women at lower and middle level positions of leadership from around the United States and the Asia Pacific region. Women active in politics, including legislators and local or provincial officials, and those working in the public sector, the media, or as advocates for issues related to women's empowerment and community development are welcome to apply. In particular, the program seeks applicants with demonstrated leadership experience, either professionally or through voluntary community activities, and who have the potential to move into positions of greater responsibility and influence. Applicants should have between five and twelve years of work experience and must have the ability to use English in a multi-cultural, professional setting. Preference will be given to candidates without significant international travel experience.
Applications must be received at the East-West Center no later than
      March 24, 2006.
