there's several of us doing agribusiness in azerbaijan.  i, for one, was nominated for community economic development, though i think several others here were nominated for more specific agribusiness jobs.  ag is huge in the caucasus and western asia, so i wouldn't rule those out as possibilities.  not to put a damper on you excitement, but it's pretty much impossible to know ahead of time what you'll be getting yourself into (and i mean that in a very positive way).

Thanks for the info! Well, I'm very sure about this though because I
originally asked for departure date after September 2007 (then got
nominated), but I changed my mind and I asked for a sooner departure
date, and they said that the would not consider it because they are
very sure they want me for this Agriculture/Business Development
program in Eastern Europe. I am glad to know what they're doing
apparently, and I am very sure I'll be heading here. What's more, I'm
moving to Spain from Feb to Septmeber and asked them what date was my
supossed staging so I can buy a return ticket on time. They said
Sept. 9th. So I guess they really want me for this, and it seems like
it will be Moldova after all! All medical is in, just waiting for
clearance and invitation... In spain though :D

                Buna Ziua,

Moldova does have an AG Business program (along with COD, HEALTH, and TEFL), AG volunteers tend to arrive in September with the CODs (Community and Organizational Development volunteers).
I do not know the specifics of their program. (Please see below for a summary).
I would suggest going to the PCMOLDOVA yahoo group and asking your questions there.

                Agro-Business

With the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the agricultural sector experienced many changes. Old structured "kholhozes", or collective farms, have practically disappeared and newly independent farmers have begun organizing themselves into farmers associations and cooperatives. The challenges facing Moldova's agricultural sector are related to a sudden shift in management style: from a centralized management structure in large Soviet collective farms to a decentralized form of decision-making in privately owned small farms. Though skilled at the basics of farming, farmers lack the basic knowledge and information necessary to sell their products both domestically and internationally in a market economy. Agriculture and Agribusiness Development (AAD) Volunteers are working with information centers for farmers, extension offices, mayor's offices in rural areas, and farmer associations throughout Moldova to improve their abilities for both production and marketing of those products.
The first Agribusiness Volunteers joined Small Business Development Volunteers in June of 1998, and in the next year the Small Business Development Project was restructured into an Agriculture and Agribusiness Development Project. The majority of the first Agribusiness Volunteers had general business backgrounds. Volunteers, with and without agriculture backgrounds, learned that their most effective work started by working alongside individual farmers, farmers groups and service providers. Successful initial activities include the establishment of demonstration plots, development of small producers groups, and development of networking options for sharing information.
In response to needs in the agribusiness sector, PC Moldova is strengthening work with agribusiness and farmer associations by requesting Volunteers with backgrounds in business concentrations that support and complement Volunteers in agriculture and agribusiness. The work of Agriculture and Agribusiness Specialists is to strengthen economic development activities in the agriculture sector. The majority of work will focus on building acceptance of farmers associations, sharing of technical information on organization and farm management, introducing new crops for marketing diversity, managing private farms as business enterprises, organizational development of the information dissemination and farm consulting centers.
The AAD Project has been developed over the past years to reflect Peace Corps Moldova's emphasis on rural development. This focus is in accordance with the Peace Corps' approach of working with communities. From the grass roots level, Peace Corps Volunteers help Moldovans link with resources that are a part of international efforts such as US AID and other international donors. The Agriculture/Agribusiness Project reflects the importance of agriculture to Moldova's economic development and an emphasis on integrating youth in Moldovan economic development.

ewe... apa minerala? I still can't take that stuff even after two years of being in moldova. Apa plata, va rog or how they say it in Moldova apa fara gaz. Anyway. I'm just replying to zukita007's email since I am a current AG volunteer in the Republic of Moldova (Group 17). I'll be leaving here in October or November, but don't worry, I'll probably see you soon during your PST (training).

The AG program is divided into four primary organzations: the first two (AGROinform and ACSA) are agricultural extension agencies and a majority of "just out of school" AG volunteers will probably end up here, so please go visit an extension agent if you have time. You get so much more respect if you know a little bit about agriculture especially advanced ag. techniques like green house, drip irrigation, etc. The last one is more important for your group since there has been a huge drought this year.

The next two are with MicroInvest and Corporation for Rural Finance, which are small business credit organizations, which give out around $2,000 worth of credit to small agricultural businesses for a low interest rate (that means around 16% last time I checked). These slots usually go to those who have a business background or more AG experience or for the older volunteers.

Most of the spots are located in Regional Centers and that's a huge plus for spoiled volunteers as myself, but there's not garuantee, so back well just in case. If you need any more information, but give me a holla at kangeroo82@....

                      Peace,
                      Scott K.

P.S. you will most likely learn romanian if you are an AG volunteer, so start now. About 98% of AG volunteers speak Romanian.
