Well I broke down and went for the Bower version of the Samyang 8mm. For my Canon 50D. Thanks to everyone for all of the advice given here on this lens.

I got this for $270US delivered after Bing 8% cash back and $6 ebay bucks cash back.

I noticed in searching that the Falcon and Bower versions of this lens have 3 yr warranties vs. 1 year for the others. The Falcon was a bit cheaper, but it would have to deliver from UK (to US). I didn't want to hassle with any possible warranty issues needing to go back to UK, so I went for the Bower.

I think it s the same lens, the warranties are the only thing the brand can offer to differentiate them from one another ;) Com os melhores cumprimentos, Paulo

If you search overstock for Bower 8mm (I added Canon) you can scroll down to the info below and see manufacturers warranty 3 years.

                  http://www.overstock.com/Electronics/Bower-8-MM-Canon-EOS-Digital-SLR-Fish-Eye-Lens/4313554/product.html

I asked the Bower seller on ebay if they had full 3 year manufacturer warranty and he said yes.

So check the warranty on Overstock. Search ebay through Bing to buy and get 8% cash back. Sign up for ebay bucks first and get $6 more. I don't know if there are any geographical limits to the offers.

I've had the Bower 8mm for a week or so now. The build quality is fine. The focus and f stop rings move very nicely with no slop and a quality feel. There is some CA, getting worse at the periphery and I have seen some flare from bright lights as well. Flare seems to be about what I've seen in samples posted online. Not sure how CA compares to other lenses since I have no other similar lens on hand to evaluate.

I do think I will need to figure out a good way to correct CA. I usually process RAWs with Canon DPP, but since there is no lens data the correct CA function does not work. I need to get the lens to register with my 50D, or find another way. I've used the CA plugin for Gimp, but it would be nice to find a method that works better. Another idea is to add the focus confirm and lens ID chip to the lens. I've seen one on ebay, but it is pre-programmed for a 16mm lens.

you can correct CA using a PROPER raw conversion program. throw that canon program in the trash! on silkypix you right-click on the CA and select correct CA

on silkypix you right-click on the CA and select 'correct CA here'. it could not be easier. you certainly don't need to mess around with focus confirm and lens ID chip!!!

you can through that silkypix in the trash. I had a bad experience with them and will never again touch a piece of locked up crap from that company.

A couple of weeks after I bought my silkypix 2, the company sneaked on me (and other users in similar situation and released silkypix 3). they don't announce their future plans so you can't time your purchase (I would have waited two weeks to get the 3). The upgrade path they offer is ridiculous. When I then wanted to migrate (back to Adobe's Raw Converter) I found that their settings are convolutely stored in some binary, maybe even encrypted format and thus lost my job.

Contrast this to Adobe, where the settings are stored in a clearly readable (human and machine) sidecar, and where I can go back to my work and my files stay readable (and for the paranoids, there is even the conversion to DNG which increases dramatically the chances of my images and work to be retrievable ten years and more down the road).

Last but not least, silkypix has one of the most stringent and restricting copy protections. it does not really protect the software (use your favorite search engine for a keygen) but it does incomodate the user. loose your key and you're fried! call the company to no avail. compare this with Adobe - very helpful customer service who can retrieve your transaction and your key.

There are plenty of excellent RAW converters out there, and an increasing number do CA correction. No need to go silkystuff and have abrasive surprises later down the road.

Between Silkypix and a real photo stitcher (I'm still using DPP, Hugin and Gimp) it could cost another $400-$500 USD. Possibly much more if I decide I need Photoshop or something like that as well.
