      There is no Pali alphabet. For a few centuries, the earliest Pali texts were memorized and transmitted orally; when they were finally written down, this was usually done in the local script (e. g. Sinhala, Burmese, Thai or Khmer); when they were finally printed, this was quite often done with Latin letters and diacritical signs.
