      THIRTEEN CANDLES

      Thirteen candles of scarlet red
      burn away the stormy night
      and the darkness
      that calls to the raven
      with wings upon the wind.

      She lights the fire
      and draws the drapes,
      crushed velvet, royal blue.

      The melancholy glow
      of soft crimson flames
      casts flickering shadows
      upon her bed chamber walls.

She watches with eyes of silence
      as forlorn shapes and images
      appear.

      They dance.
      They shimmer.
      They haunt her mind
      like phantoms of candle light,
      ghost-white specters of the night.

Down and dim the candles burn
      with flames fading from sight.
The dying embers crackle and glow
      with one last flicker
      of living light.

      She sits before the mirror;
      her reflection from another
      place and time.
She brushes her long, dark hair,
      black as midnight...
      black as the raven's eyes.
