(ANSAmed) - MADRID, FEBRUARY 6 - Spain's recession has led to an increasing number of families and companies which declared bankruptcy, obtaining the suspension of payments to creditors, according to data published on Wednesday by national statistics bureau Ine. Only in the fourth trimester of 2012, 2,584 declared bankruptcy, up 57% on the previous trimester and up 38.4% compared to the same period in 2011 - the highest increase in the last five years.

In the last trimester of 2012, 2,444 declared bankruptcy, 39.7% more than the same period last year. Bankrupt companies increased by 42.4% in 2012 on an annual basis, 2,349 in total, 60% more than the previous third trimester; 28.2% of companies which went bankrupt between October and December 2012 operated in the construction sector while 19.4% were in retail and 18.7% in industry and energy. Ine's data indicated that in the last trimester of last year small and medium-sized companies with an annual turnover under 2 million euros were most hit by the crisis as they represented 70.2% of the companies which obtained the suspension of payments.
